Rotor Sails, Wind Assisted Propulsion Systems

ECO FLETTNER brings to the marine industry a rich blend of fabricating experience coupled with experience in demanding engineering projects.

Rotor wind propulsion thrust

The spinning cylinder creates the same forward thrust as a conventional sails of ten times larger size. An increase in flow velocity over the front of the cylinder results in a decrease in pressure (suction). On the back of the cylinder a decrease in flow velocity results in an increase in pressure.

Airflow and lift force over a spinning cylinder. From the pressure difference, an aerodynamic lift force is produced and induced into the ship’s hull and giving propulsive thrust. The rotor thrust is directed at about 90 degrees from the apparent wind direction following the rotational sense.

ECO FLETTNER offers the latest generation of Rotor Sailing Systems on New Buildings or Retrofitting on existing ships.

Advantages of the ECO FLETTNER Rotor Sailing System:

* Light Weight rotor with two end disks

* Less Co2,SOx, NOx and other emissions

* IMO - Improved Energy Efficiency on Ships (EEDI,EEXI,CII...)

* Automated Intelligent Sailing and Safety System

* No additional crew required on board

* No set, trim or reef of sails

* No safety risks in severe conditions due to heavy weather sailing system

* Exceptional smoothness at high operating speeds

* Charterer/Owner benefited from improved carbon footprint on supply chain

* Higher Charter rate benefits achievable due to fuel savings

* No impact in cargo operations
